Anyone who has small children or lives with children heard about Momo in this year of 2019. They were children’s music videos, drawings or slime tutorials that, by the way, showed a hideous doll talking about suicide or teaching violent acts. Many people denounced on YouTube Kids (platform with rating of content for children under 8), the monster apparently disappeared from the www and now we are forever free of this threat. Ufa!

But not quite. I regret to inform you that there are things as absurd and bizarre as Momo nearby (at fingertips from the curious representatives of the Alpha Generation). An application called GACHA LIFE, which allows them to create their own anime characters and share with friends, is in fashion nowadays among school-age children. You can customize every detail, from physical features to clothing and accessories. With the help of another app, the kids make videos of short stories and insert dialog balloons. Then just go up on YouTube and wait for the likes.

Many of these “Gacha soap operas” are really innocent and fun. Some mini-movies talk about friendships, family, fashion and music. But in the YouTube-not-kids immensity it’s hard to filter out what’s good and what’s bad (especially for our developing kids). With the automatic playback of one video after another, in sequences of a few minutes, a door opens to another Gacha universe. Dark, heavy and wicked.

There’s a Gacha soap opera “24 hours in heat“.

Has Gacha “my perverted wolf”.

Has Gacha “Pregnant at 14 years old“.

Has Gacha “The girl who fell in love with death“.

There’s Gacha talking about sexual abuse, there’s psychopathic Gacha, there’s incest Gacha (“I fell in love with my brother”). There’s a zombie Gacha that goes out and kills everyone in sight. This is all in Portuguese. It’s just surreal!

The wave of Gacha videos came from the United States. It was there that, at Momo’s time, the #ProtectOurKids campaign appeared. Groups monitor and report scenes such as human trafficking, shootings and death threats embedded in common cartoons such as mini-films shot in Minecraft scenarios. But no effort is enough for cleaning.

What follows from all this?

Reporting inappropriate videos is important and we should all collaborate immediately, but in practice it’s like washing dishes. As soon as you finish, you start accumulating more. Inappropriate things will never cease to exist in the digital world. As parents, we only have one way out: close and continuous monitoring is ESSENTIAL not only in terms of screen usage time, but also of the content our children are interested in. Otherwise, in the middle of dinner or in the car coming back from class, that kind of question comes that you don’t even know where to start to answer. (That’s if you’re lucky enough that your child is talking to you instead of having his face buried in his cell phone just seeing this kind of digital junk).

PS: Mothers created a petition to take Gacha videos off the air.
