The fashion market in Brazil has gained strength in recent years, with the increase in the purchasing power of Brazilians. Increasingly as garments enter the priority list of consumers – even though the crisis has affected the country from 2013 onwards.

Fashion is such a significant market that it has become one of the most important segments for the national economy.

As a result, many entrepreneurs decide to invest in clothing brands – whether in apparel or retail. Branding is the first step in making your dream come true.

Along with that, comes One of the most important steps: choosing a name for your clothing brand. It is essential that the chosen name represents the brand’s identity and attracts the public’s attention, isn’t it?

7 tips for choosing the name of your clothing brand

Let’s follow along with some important tips to decide which will be your brand’s calling card: the name. Let’s go there?

1. Brainstorm

First of all, it is necessary get the ideas out of your head and put it on paper . All go by writing the names that you like or that suit your business. If you have the help of your friends and family, suggestions may come! No wonder this process is called brainstorming (brainstorm) .

Once you have a list of several names, it’s time to start selecting the most interesting ones for your clothing brand.

2. Think of original names

When it comes to differentiating yourself in the market, nothing needs to be as original as your brand name. It’s the name that will catch the public’s attention and make consumers remember your business.

Never create a name too similar to a brand that already exists. For example: “Luis Viton” is very similar to the French original Louis Vuitton. In addition to being a wrong choice, you could take a beautiful suit from the European brand for using a “Brazilianized” name that is almost a copy of the other. Try to pick names that you haven’t seen anywhere yet – even if it’s from another segment!

3. Bet on short, easy-to-remember names

Choosing a short name is a good strategy for your audience to quickly memorize your clothing brand. Acronyms are also welcome! Another tip is prevent your brand name from being difficult to spell or pronounce.

If you want to choose a name in another language, if pronunciation and writing are easy and if the word is known by Brazilians. Example: “Legal” (Legal, in Portuguese).

Oh, your first or last name (or both together) can also be used for your brand . Who never dreamed of having a brand with their own name, such as Giorgio Armani!? Chic, huh?

4. Think about the target audience

If your audience is children, there’s nothing fairer than choosing a name for your clothing brand that has to do with children, right? The same goes for women’s and men’s clothing. Imagine a men’s clothing store called “Beautiful”. It doesn’t match the target audience. Then, worth your common sense.

If you intend to reach all audiences – male, female and children – choose a name that is more general. Example: “Loja Catarinense” (this is an example, ok? It does not mean that this name is available for use).

5. Know your competitors

To stand out in your industry, you need to know your competition. Not only keep track of what they’re doing, but understand how the public behaves in relation to other brands.

Do a research on the profile of similar brands and try to differentiate yourself as much as possible when choosing your name. For example: Adidas bets on sportswear, so it is very natural to differentiate itself from the Colcci brand, which features more casual clothes.

6. Check that the name you have chosen is not a registered trademark.

Imagine choosing an awesome name for your clothing brand and then creating a logo, building a website and even a storefront, and suddenly you find that the brand already exists?

To find out if a brand legally exists, it is not enough to search for the chosen name on Google. You must also choose a name that has not been registered and protected by another company.

In Brazil there is an agency that regulates the registration of trademarks and patents, the INPI (National Institute of Intellectual Property). The institute makes available for public consultation the trademark registrations that already exist and also those that are in progress.

However, your search for trademarks on the INPI website must be judicious, taking into account the logo and full name, as well as prefixes and various combinations.

7. Check the name at the Board of Trade

After carrying out the search for trademarks at the INPI, you also need to check if the name already exists on the website of the Board of Trade of your State, the body responsible for recording activities related to business companies.

Many entrepreneurs look for inspiration in brands that already exist and are successful with the public. But be careful for the name not to be too similar to brands already registered. Then check out a list of familiar names, which can be a headache if you create a very similar brand. See below.

The name I chose has already been registered. What do I do?

Simple: choose another name. According to the Industrial Property Law (Law 9,279/96) the priority of the trademark belongs to whoever requested registration first on the INPI website.

In order not to fall into this trap, the tip is: never create the company before researching the brand name at the INPI.
