- Photoirritation: Assesses what happens when the product is exposed to light.
Then we have children’s makeup that can be used after age 12, which undergoes less testing. For both age groups, the power of fixation is evaluated, they are products that must leave the skin quickly and be removed only with water.
Any product that has very good fixation also has more potential to cause allergy. In addition, there is no makeup remover that is suitable for children, so removal can only be done with water.
Within the children’s makeup category we have makeup for dolls. This type of makeup is tested for toxicity if the child eats, but their skin reactions are not evaluated. Doll makeup should not be used on the skin, even for play.
Are there any risks?
Yes, the use of children’s makeup presents some risks. Are they:
- Allergy: even with all the tests and using a reliable product, a child’s skin is very thin and therefore absorbs more than an adult’s skin.
- Contact dermatitis
- Redness
- Itch
- Skin peeling
Remember that allergy symptoms do not usually appear the first time a child uses children’s makeup. The first care should be when buying children’s makeup. Check if it has the Anvisa registration number. The record has 9 numbers and usually starts with “reg ms”.
Buy well-known and reputable brands, in toy and home variety stores it’s common to see Chinese products, but they don’t have ANVISA registration and obviously haven’t been tested as they should. It’s worth spending a little more and buying a product that has credibility.
There is no such thing as “toy make-up” and “party make-up”. Even to play, the product must be good and approved by Anvisa.
Lastly, look at the age for which the product is recommended. Most are for use from age 5 and up. Don’t think it’s bullshit, okay? The age range is defined based on tests that assess the product’s reaction on the skin.
