When Jenkins decided to open his own grocery store, he adopted the name “Publix” from a struggling New York-based movie theater company (with 19 opulently decorated movie houses in Florida) called Publix Theatres Corporation. Jenkins stated “Most of the theaters were closing up, and I liked the sound of the name, so I just took it for my store.”

A short struggle then occurred with the boy’s 69-year-old grandmother, who was thrown to the ground and killed as well. The shooter, identified as 55-year-old Timothy J. Wall, then committed suicide. No link has been found between the gunman and the victims, although Wall’s social media posts indicated an inclination to “kill people and children”. Publix told news sources that “the store had been disinfected and rearranged”; the building re-opened two days later on June 12.
By 1959, Publix was the dominant supermarket chain in Central Florida, and began expansion to South Florida, opening a store in Miami and acquiring six stores from Grand Union. In 1963, the company built a distribution center in Miami, and began providing deli services. In 1970, sales surpassed $500 million; they reached $1 billion in 1974, when the chain expanded to include Jacksonville, Florida.

Publix as a company has also donated to former Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam’s campaign. This monetary behavior led to numerous die-ins in Publix supermarkets based on political affiliation with gun supporters after a deadly school shooting in Florida.
That doesn’t mean that the Publix-affiliated part of the family doesn’t have ties with Trump. In fact, Fancelli’s own sister, Carol Barnett Jenkins, donated to former Georgia Senator David Perdue as well as a right-leaning PAC. Publix as a company has also donated to former Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam’s campaign.

Following the news that Fancelli from Publix Supermarket donated to Trump’s rally, several people came forward to show their outrage. The hashtag #BoycottPublix started to trend after hundreds of people came on Twitter to talk about the company and how it is best for the nation to boycott it.
On January 31, the company released a statement regarding Fancelli, heir to the Publix supermarket fortune: “Mrs Fancelli is not an employee of Publix Super Markets, and is neither involved in our business operations nor does she represent the company in any way. We cannot comment on Mrs Fancelli’s actions.”
