Why Can’T I Lose Inches Off My Waist?

If you’re clearly losing inches around your waist and not losing weight, then you’re gaining lean body weight at the same time (like muscles). That’s a good thing. Not sure if you really need to lose any pounds (you don’t mention weight or height) but perhaps just keep doing what you’re doing?

Some people who lose weight will lose it in the form of muscle and water weight ( 10 ). This causes them to end up looking “skinny fat.” This where they appear thin but have a much higher body fat percentage. And because of this they tend to store excess fat in their waist and can’t seem to get rid of it.

It can be frustrating trying to figure out why you are not losing weight yet the inches are dropping off. It drives you crazy. You feel lighter, your belly is a little toned but you can’t see any difference on the scale, and it baffles you. Here are some possible reasons why this happens. 1. You Are Gaining Muscle

Why is visceral fat bad for you?

This is because visceral fat surrounds your organs and places excess stress on them. This can cause serious health problems over time.

Some people are born with an apple or pear-shaped body that can promote the storage of excess fat on their waist ( 2 ). Women tend to more likely have a pear-shaped body while men tend to have an apple shape ( 3 ). But both can contribute to storing excess fat on the waist.

Now, this is kind of a trick question because losing inches off your waist overnight will not be in the form of fat. With that said you could theoretically and temporarily lose a couple of inches off your waist “overnight” by sweating it out. As a trainer and fitness coach, I do not like recommending this.

These workouts combine high-intensity interval training in the form of cardio to achieve a higher total amount of fat burned. Studies have found high-intensity interval training burns a significant more amount of fat than traditional cardiovascular exercise ( 13 ).

Lots of people work tirelessly with their diet and exercise only to find those last stubborn inches of belly fat on their waists will not come off. Most people know spot reduction in certain areas of the body isn’t an effective way to lose targeted fat.
