You will really want to like the rotisserie chicken you buy from Whole Foods, as their chickens are organic, free-range, and free of hormones. However, there’s one big problem: they don’t taste good. Or, more specifically, there isn’t much taste at all. Whole Foods rotisserie chickens are like biting into an old, worn out piece of rubber.

Walmart rotisserie chicken Like many items at Walmart, the only good thing about their rotisserie chickens is the fact that it’s cheap. You can usually get one for less than $5 — or even less if you time it right.

The goal with rotisserie chicken (and other roasting methods) is *high* heat, and therefore cooking the bird more quickly, not more slowly. So what actually makes it so delicious? High-heat cooking “browns” the outside of the meat.

But the term “rotisserie” (which can refer to both a shop specializing in roasted meats using this method, or the rotating spits themselves) and the concept of replacing a home-cooked meal with one centered around it, didn’t hit the American zeitgeist until Boston Market (formerly named Boston Chicken) was founded in 1985.
