Oats refers to whole oats, which are cylindrical and unprocessed. These are the oats that are fed to livestock. Oatmeal typically refers to rolled oats. These are oats that are cut thinly so that they can be cooked within about five minutes.

Organic and conventional oats are nutritionally identical. Organic farming methods are markedly different from conventional growing methods, and according to a research review published in 2014 in the “British Journal of Nutrition,” organic crops may also contain higher antioxidant concentrations (see Ref 1).

Regular Oats. Also called old-fashioned oats, this is the classic oatmeal. It is steamed and rolled to be pressed into thinner flakes—hence the term “rolled oats.”. Since the husk has been removed, protein content is decreased compared to the steel-cut variety.

Organic oatmeal is made from oats that are certified organic – that is, grown without the use of synthetic pesticides or fertilizers (organic certification allows a restricted list of pesticides derived from plant sources or simple chemicals like copper or sulphur sprays) and is non-GMO.

Is organic oats safe?

Although organic and conventional oats have the same nutritional information and benefits, there is a chance organic oats could be safer to consume because they are not produced with chemical pesticides or fertilizers.

Just because organic oats are not grown with direct pesticide application doesn’t mean they are completely free of pesticide or chemical residue. According to the results of a study published in “Food Control” in 2013, the number of organic oat samples testing positive for toxin residue was actually higher than the number for conventional samples.
