Starbucks Nitro Cold Brew Our Nitro Cold Brew is created when our signature Cold Brew (slow-steeped for 20 hours) is infused with nitrogen as it pours from the tap. Nitrogen infusion creates microbubbles, giving the coffee a cascading, frothy texture. The result is a velvety-smooth coffee with a subtly sweet flavor and a rich, creamy head of foam.

The beverage’s creamy texture and thick head — which result from what Starbucks refers to as its “nitro cascade” and “cascade of bubbles” — just don’t settle in quite right in the larger cups.

If you haven’t tried nitro coffee yet, you’re missing out! Nitro is cold coffee on tap that’s infused with tiny nitrogen bubbles, and the bubbles give this coffee a foamy texture, like beer. Starbucks serves Nitro Cold Brew unsweetened and without milk, half-and-half, soy milk, almond milk, or whatever other creamer-type agent you like to splash into your coffee. And you’re strongly advised not to head over to the condiment bar to add any of these extras in yourself.

What is Nitro Cold Brew with Sweet Cream?

The drink is served unsweetened to highlight the flavor the cold brewing process brings out in the coffee. If you want to amp up the sweetness, ask for Nitro Cold Brew with Sweet Cream. It will be topped with a float of house-made vanilla sweet cream resulting in a subtly-sweet cascade of velvety coffee.

Like Cold Brew before it, Starbucks first launched Nitro Cold Brew in Seattle. When it launched we couldn’t believe how quickly it shot up to become one of the highest selling beverages. (What is the highest selling? The latte!)

Cold Brew is a method of crafting iced coffee where the coffee never comes into contact with hot water. The coffee is steeped in cool water, with time replacing heat to extract flavor.

In most stores you can order Nitro Cold Brew “to stay” and it will be served up in a pint glass so you can see the gorgeous cascade of nitrogen bubbles swirling about.

How to tell if Starbucks is serving Nitro?

1. Look for the beer-like tap. To know if your Starbucks is serving nitro, look for the signage, of course, or the telltale chrome double-tap at the corner, which looks a lot like a beer tap you might see at a bar.

As the nitro pours out, it cascades into the cup, separating a bit into darker and lighter brew, with a thick, foamy top—it looks a lot like a Guinness beer, and even has a similar texture.

Nitro Cold-Brew starts off as the chain’s regular Cold-Brew, which it released just last year. Under the counter is a single keg of cold-brew coffee; one line runs to the plain cold-brew tap, and the other line gets infused with tiny nitrogen bubbles as it pours out of the nitro tap.

5. It has only 5 calories—naturally.

The beans the chain uses for its cold brew have a slight natural sweetness to them already, and the nitro’s foamy crema delivers a smooth, thick texture, so you won’t miss the cream or sugar.

Nitro is served up unsweetened, without ice —avoid both of those things, and forgo the milk station as well, or you’ll risk quickly diluting that foamy top. (It already comes out of the keg cold.) 4. Lose the lid and straw. Don’t be confused when the barista sets down your nitro without a lid and straw.
