Sprouts Farmers Market—a beloved regional chain with locations in nearly half of all states, and an especially high concentration in California—is closing some of its stores permanently.

Organic health food store Sprouts Farmers Market has announced it is closing two stores in the San Francisco Bay Area in California soon on June 3, SF Gate reports. While the chain did not give a specific reason for the closures, the company has been struggling amidst competition for the past few years.

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Kroger Co. will close two Southern California supermarkets in response to a local ordinance requiring extra pay for certain grocery employees working during the pandemic.

“As a result of the City of Long Beach’s decision to pass an ordinance mandating Extra Pay for grocery workers, we have made the difficult decision to permanently close long-struggling store locations in Long Beach,” the company said in a statement.

The trend of grocery stores closing within the food industry has extended into 2022, and the following seven chains continue to make news as they call it quits and shutter multiple locations.

A Whole Foods spokesperson revealed to Bloomberg that the decision to close stores was due to their individual performance and not reflective of the chain’s overall growth. Even amidst permanent closings in these specific markets, the organic grocery store continues to pop up elsewhere.
