Retrospective 2017: the year of football in Paraná in facts, phrases and photos

What was the image that most marked football in Paraná in 2017? Operário-PR lifting the Series D cup or Londrina champion over Atlético-MG? There is also the exciting campaign by Paraná Clube until access to Serie A, with a trajectory full of great moments and that took the stadiums of rivals in the capital.

The symbol of the year may not be just an achievement, but the distant and sad look of a fan who believed until the end and ended up seeing Coritiba relegated. Or the farewell of a coach who worked for six years and followed the team out of the second division of Paranaense until winning a national title.

There is also the rivalry Atletiba, which won new chapters in 2017 with the teams, literally, hand in hand in the classic that was not held during Paranaense. What seemed like a year of sharpening the edges was soured with exchanges of barbs, disagreements and ended with leaders forgetting diplomacy and behaving like fans.

And what about Paraná? What state was this? If we can’t say that it was so exciting on the pitch, off it… The Getterson case was the high point of the fight on the carpet and it canceled rounds, threatened results, modified clashes in the final phase and ended with JMalucelli found guilty for the squad irregular. The punishment of losing points and relegation was the final blow for the club, which was closed in December due to lack of prospects. Ah, Coritiba was champion.

Titles, achievements, backstage confusion, promise of R10 in the area, disappointments, accusations and at least one epic game in Libertadores. Phew, until 2017 was busy. Below, we separate these moments from each of the main teams from Paraná. Check out:

Paraná: to go down in history

Paraná Clube started the year wanting to put a stop to the Serie B decade of the Brazilian Nationals. The first step was the arrival of Rodrigo Pastana as football manager. With experience in Guarani and showing that he knows stones to be cut amidst the inflated rosters of the big teams or forgotten in the small ones, he helped to assemble a group that was gradually getting stronger.

The beginning was not easy. Chosen to be the coach that would lead the team to a better season, Wagner Lopes, drew attention and headed for Asian football right after the end of Paranaense. Cristian de Souza arrived and it didn’t work, making room for Lisca, who interrupted his passage with the team on the rise, but with a lot of confusion. The coach was accused of assaulting the then assistant coach, Matheus Costa, on the eve of the game against Atlético-MG, for the First League Cup.

It was the whole day with unfounded questions and erupts with aggression. I’m sure he’ll talk about it clearly and admit the mistake, but there was the so-called “day of rage” – Rodrigo Pastana, about Lisca.

Games with Atlético-MG are not good memories for Paraná, who lost goalkeeper Léo in the match of the Copa do Brasil. He suffered a fractured face after a collision with Fred and left Paraná practically without a goalkeeper. Richard was hired in a hurry coming from Água Santa-SP.

Returning to the moment in Paraná: climate, crisis and no coach for the third time in the middle of Serie B. It seemed that the year was going to end like so many others… But everything was resolved internally, with Matheus Costa as interim and then as permanent. Speaking the same language as the players, he closed the group for the sole purpose of access.

After joining the G-4, a marketing campaign based on emotion called the fans to show their strength not in Vila Capanema, but in the Arena da Baixada and with a provocation: breaking the attendance record at Atlético-PR. The match against Internacional was perfect. Victory from 1 to 0 with a stadium never seen so full (with the exception of the World Cup), vibrating and the confirmation that the G-4 of Serie B was not a mere chance.

Access came with a 1-0 victory over the CRB, in Alagoas. The party away from home soon resolved itself with a veritable tricolor invasion at the airport. The motorcade to Vila Capanema for another party showed that the Paraná fan no longer fits in a van.

To close the show of paranist strength, the last game of Série B – already in a festive atmosphere – was at Couto Pereira. The capacity was 37 thousand fans at the Coritiba stadium, in a 1-1 draw with Boa Esporte, which was also the last game of goalkeeper Marcos as a professional. With a “thank you, Marcão” and relieved, the Paranist fans said goodbye to a 2017 that will go down in history.

The day that seemed never to come has arrived. After six years as coach of Londrina, Claudio Tencati called the press and announced that he would not continue working at the club in 2018.

Londrina will be imprinted on my heart. I feel happy, privileged. I felt the need for this change of air, but not because I wasn’t happy with Londrina, but because of my professional side. I know I need to go to the market and I felt this need for it, Claudio Tencati

Before the announcement of the end of an unparalleled cycle in the club’s history, Tencati left one more joy for the fans: winning the Premier League Cup undefeatedly and over Fred, Robinho and company’s Atlético-MG.

The match at the Café stadium was tough, tight, but played as equals. With the goalless draw, it was up to Caesar to defend two penalties and give the Shark joy.

Londrina’s end of season was also exciting. After wasting points – remember the 3-0 loss to ABC flashlight? – Along the journey through Serie B, Tubarão showed that he likes emotion. There were five victories in a row that put the team in a position to win a place in Serie A. The mission was to beat the leader América-MG in the penultimate round, but it didn’t happen and buried the chances.

It’s champion! Operário-PR takes the title of Series D

You can’t forget a party of the size that Operário-PR’s fans held with the title of champion of the Series D of the Brazilian Nationals. On September 10th, even with a 1-0 loss to Globo, from Rio Grande do Norte, Fantasma fans celebrated their first national title in 105 years of history. The team used the 5-0 rout in the first game to lift the cup.

Is it a fourth division title? Yeah, but so what? What matters is that the cup and stadium were full. Mainly after the disappointment in the campaign of the access division of Paranaense. After the 2015 title of state champion, the team fell in 2016 and was unable to return in 2017. The fans felt, but did not lose heart and made the party.

This access was greatly deserved for everything we managed to do in the championship. There was a lot of distrust after the elimination in the second division. We shielded ourselves, closed ourselves off and said we would seek this access. Atlético-PR: epic game in the group of death and disappointing end

The year was very promising. Maybe that’s why the disappointment was great. Atlético-PR bet on names like Jonathan, Gedoz, Carlos Alberto and Grafite, thinking about Libertadores and doing well in Brasileirão. He started with important victories, beating Millonarios, Capiatá and joining one of the most difficult groups in the Libertadores, along with San Lorenzo, Universidad Católica-CHI and Flamengo.

Atlético-PR reached the last round of the group in a delicate situation. He needed to beat Católica and played one of the most exciting games in the club’s history. After losing 1-0, he managed to turn the result to 3 to 2, at 41 minutes of the second half. The then “ugly duckling” of the group qualified, leaving Flamengo behind.

With the Libertadores spaced out, Atlético-PR could not keep pace. Carlos Alberto and Grafite, two of the main bets, did not yield results and left with the Brasileirão in progress. And halfway through, Paulo Autuori became a director, Eduardo Baptista arrived and left, and Fabiano Soares took over. With the new commander, Hurricane faced Santos for the round of 16. It lost in Vila Capanema (the Baixada hosted the World Volleyball League at the time) and in Vila Belmiro (although Atlético-PR had, at the time, its best performance in 2017).

It hurts a lot after showing that Atlético have a beautiful game proposal. It is difficult because it creates, creates, creates and cannot do. We demonstrate to Brazil and South America that we are great – Fabiano Soares

The club began to suffer on and off the field. He dropped in the table and didn’t even get a spot in the G-8 – he finished 11th. In addition, confusion between the fans and the board (mainly due to violent acts by the organization) turned the square into a grandstand and the Baixada into a cold stadium. To close 2017, Fabiano and Autuori left, as well as names like Fabrício, Lucho González and Lucas Fernandes. A year practically…
