U.S.-based restaurant chain International House of Pancakes (IHOP) had 1,670 restaurants in the United States in 2010. That was 40 units less than the previous year. The number of restaurants belonging to this restaurant chain increased by 66 units over the past six years.
The majority of these were operating in its home nation of the United States, 1,670 to be precise. IHOP is owned by Dine Brands Global, also parent company to U.S. casual dining restaurant chain Applebee’s. The dessert chain accounted for around 130 more units than Applebee’s in 2020.
In 2019, IHOP began its foray into South America, opening three locations in Ecuador. IHOP Express’ first location opened in 2011, they are a quick service version of the chain offered at locations such as airports, school campuses, military food courts and travel centers.
International House of Pancakes® began making people smile in 1958 when it opened its doors in the suburbs of Los Angeles. Fifteen years later, a new marketing campaign introduced the acronym “IHOP”, and since then it’s been the name people know as the place they can enjoy their favorite breakfast experience—any time of day.
When did IHOP become IHOP?
In 1976, at the same time as reorganization International Industries became IHOP.
It is owned by Dine Brands Global —a company formed after IHOP’s purchase of Applebee’s, with 99% of the restaurants run by independent franchisees.
The company argued that the previous logo looked too much like a frown.
The buyout successfully closed on November 29, 2007, and the corporate entity IHOP changed its name to DineEquity on June 2, 2008. A franchisee opened a hybrid Applebee’s/IHOP restaurant in downtown Detroit in mid-2018.
In early September 2010, IHOP filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles against International House of Prayer and six other defendants alleging trademark dilution and infringement. The lawsuit was dropped on December 21, 2010, with the dispute resolved out of court.
IHOP Express’ first location opened in 2011, they are a quick service version of the chain offered at locations such as airports, school campuses, military food courts and travel centers. The first standalone public location of the concept opened in downtown San Diego in 2011.
By the end of 2018, IHOP restaurants operated in six Middle Eastern countries: Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain , the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon. In 2019, IHOP began its foray into South America, opening three locations in Ecuador.
How many IHOPs will be open in 2020?
Popular American casual dining chain International House of Pancakes (IHOP) operated 1,772 restaurants in 2020, down from 1,841 the previous year. The majority of these were operating in its home nation of the United States, 1,670 to be precise.
The dessert chain accounted for around 130 more units than Applebee’s in 2020. However, while IHOP is the larger restaurant chain in terms of units, Applebee’s is more successful than its sister company when it comes to sales.
