Does Diet Soda Make Joints Hurt?

Acidic pH in the human body system appears to be a risk factor for arthritis-induced joint pain. Regular soda prepared with ordinary sugar is already highly acidic. When diet soda prepared with aspartame is ingested, the acidity range is even higher. Signs of high acidity include symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue and joint pain.

Some research suggests that high intakes of phosphorus have been linked to negative effects on bone health ( 21 ). Additionally, one large study in postmenopausal women showed that each serving of soda — including both regular and diet soda — per day was associated with a 14% higher risk of hip fracture ( 22 ).

Both may increase your risk if you drink them in large amounts. Some studies show that drinking diet soda could be associated with decreased bone density and an increased risk of fractures, possibly due to its phosphoric acid and caffeine content. 5. May affect heart health

Diet sodas made with the artificial sweetener aspartame can trigger inflammation and contribute to joint pain. The answer isn’t to switch back to sugary sodas, of course.

How much aspartame is in diet soda?

But even if you don’t have gout, if you’re sensitive to alcohol it can increase inflammation throughout your body, including in your joints. Cutting back on, or eliminating, the alcohol may finally ease your joint pain. Give it a test for a few weeks to find out. 2.

Not everyone is sensitive to casein of course. In fact, some folks who suffer from arthritis find milk and dairy to be helpful in reducing joint pain. So it’s best to try a simple elimination diet—removing dairy from your diet for a couple of weeks—to see if you feel better or not. 8.
