Why are self checkouts gone?

Where self-checkout corrals are used instead of full lanes with belts, you can typically fit about 6–7 bags before running out of space. In fact, self-checkouts are often slower than regular registers (except at my walmart, of course), as shoppers struggle with non-scanning barcodes, scales that return items to scan agai.
