Eggs are a wonderful complement to a plant-based lifestyle as they can help you consume more vegetables. Plus, eggs can help you absorb more of the fat-soluble vitamins and antioxidants found in plant foods such as vitamin E and carotenoids.

What is a plant based diet?

The way that I define “plant-based” is a style of eating that includes mainly plant foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

You do not need to completely cut out meat and animal products to be plant-based. In fact, completely cutting out all meat and animal products could mean not getting enough nutrients like vitamin B12, calcium, vitamin D, omega-3s, iron and protein.

As a registered dietitian, I am often asked if eggs fit in a plant-based diet. My answer: eggs not only fit but serve an integral role in a plant-forward eating plan. Contrary to popular belief, eating “plant-based” does not mean “only plants.” In fact, there is no “official” definition of the term “plant-based diet.” The way that I define “plant-based” is a style of eating that includes mainly plant foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains. And I fully endorse consuming more plant-foods because Americans don’t eat the daily recommended amounts of them!

Why do vegetarians eat eggs?

Many vegetarians choose these diets to lower their likelihood of catching or developing a disease that you may acquire when you are consuming a largely animal-based diet which would include eggs. Animal-based diets are said to increase inflammation, increase cholesterol, and increase the chances of developing cancers.

Many people who engage in the whole food plant-based diet tend to reject what goes on in the farming industry for moralistic and ethical issues. Social media and word of mouth has been very hard on the meat and dairy industry and especially factory farming.

Free-range organic eggs come from hens who have been able to eat a much more superior diet in comparison to their factory-farmed relatives. Exercise and a well rounded plant-based diet produces a healthier egg. Vegetarians and those who eat a whole food plant-based diet tend to choose free-range and organic egg s.

So that puts eggs in a strange position because some people feel like they can eat eggs without necessarily taking a life. That seems to satisfy a moral dilemma amongst many striving towards a whole food plant based diet.

Eggs have a bad rap because they may increase cholesterol to dangerous levels. This may in turn increase the likelihood of heart disease. It seems like eggs have a healthier reputation these days. Eggs also have a difference in Omega 3 as opposed to Omega 6 fatty acids depending on what the hens eat.

A smashed banana works as a great egg replacement as well and you will need to use 65 grams or 1/4th cup. But the downside to banana as an egg replacement will be that your recipe will take on a banana flavor if that wasn’t the intent, the same goes for the apple sauce.

Non-whole-food based, or processed plant proteins have also become very popular. One of the most popular makers of plant-based protein is Beyond Meat. Beyond Meat plant-based, meat products are a delicious and excellent alternative to eggs.

Why are eggs important for breakfast?

Eggs are a phenomenal source of complete protein and an array of vitamins and minerals that are important for hormonal function and overall good health. A simple breakfast that includes two eggs can quickly go from nutritionally lackluster to everything you need to start your day. Just as a reference, one eggs contains:

Eggs are very high in cholesterol—roughly 150-190 mg of cholesterol can be found in a single egg. An AHA journal published in 2019 reiterates the often stated 300 mg daily limit for cholesterol—albeit with a focus on studying its pairing with saturated fats in the Western diet, reflecting a modern understanding of nutrition.

We’ve discussed in the past how a plant-based diet need not require someone to permanently give up all animal products, but rather a healthy reduction in consumption may benefit many individuals as well as our planet. Plant-based diets offer more flexibility so that people can gradually make changes towards a healthier future.

What is a plant based diet?

News & World Report describes plant-based diets “as an approach that emphasizes minimally processed foods from plants, with modest amounts of fish, lean meat and low-fat dairy, and red meat only sparingly” 2. Regardless of the definition, the common denominator among all descriptions of a plant-based diet is, well, plants!

Research suggests that including protein at snack time can improve appetite and hunger control, which can prevent overeating later in the day 11. That makes eggs the perfect addition to your midday plans. Hard boil a batch of eggs early in the week to enjoy as a quick snack. Pair an egg with a side of fruit or veggies and a handful of nuts to get a good balance of protein, carbs and good fats.
