Starbucks is pretty much on every corner right now, but the future might look a little different. And now, there’s news that Starbucks is planning on closing up to 100 more locations nationwide—though there’s no need to panic yet.

Struggling under the weight of a seriously depressed economy, Starbucks announced (via Reuters) that they were going to close as many as 600 stores and eliminate 12,000 jobs. That announcement came in 2008, and by early 2009, CNN Money was reporting that number became 300 stores and 6,700 jobs.

Stores slated to close have adjusted their hours on the Starbucks site and app to reflect their final days of service. Staff at Starbucks stores ranging from downtown Toronto to Richmond Hill are now scrambling to let their regulars know they’ll have to find an alternative spot for their bean water.

When one person tests positive for the virus, Starbucks conducts contact tracing of the store’s staff. The stores close for deep cleaning and sometimes may need to modify hours when they reopen, a spokeswoman said.

Sales were down in the cities and up in the suburbs, he said. Starbucks also stepped up curbside pickup, adding it to 800 U.S. stores last year with plans to offer it at 2,000 stores by the end of this year. In urban areas, it has added some pickup stations and partnered with Uber Eats for deliveries.

Starbucks is looking ahead, and closing 150 stores is just a part of their solution. Another part is the very odd business decision that opens their doors — and their bathrooms — to anyone, with no purchases required.

Just hearing about Starbucks and their problem with racism is enough to turn some people away from ever setting foot in the door again, and that’s a problem they’ll have to deal with for a long, long time. More immediate is the money they lost from their several hour, company-wide closure and training program for their 180,000 employees.
