Unable to find a good German beer in the area, Schell partnered with Jacob Bernhardt and decided to build a brewery and make his own beer. In 1866, Schell bought out Bernhardt to take full ownership of the company. The Schell family still owns and operates the company and is the second oldest family-owned brewery in America after D. G. Yuengling & Son.
The Schaefer family sold the company to the Stroh Brewery Company in 1981. In 1999, Stroh Brewery was acquired by the Pabst Brewing Company , which still retains the license to Schaefer’s beer. Pabst outsources a reformulated version of the beer and sells it in niche markets in the United States.

The brewery relocated in 1850 to Cronenbourg and adapted its name to reflect it’s new home. The company is now owned by Carlsberg but that hasn’t stopped it claiming international respect and remain the best selling larger in France.
How much did craft beer sales decline in 2017?
Domestically-brewed craft beers continue to soar in popularity. While overall U.S. beer volume sales declined by 1.0% in 2017, craft beer sales surged at a rate of 5.0% by volume.
Some beer brands on this list, like Narragansett, were able to remain open through legal loopholes. Others, such as Lone Star, were forced to discontinue operations, and did not return until after Prohibition’s repeal.
The one exception is Schell’s Brewery, which was founded in 1860 and does not make the same brew that it did over 150 years ago. At the time, the brewery produced Schell’s Lager, an all malt-base beer that is similar to what is produced today but not the same.
