What Is A Jumbo Onion?

Onions range in size from less than one-inch in diameter to more than 4.5-inches in diameter. The most common sizes sold in the U.S. for retail are between 2 to 3-3/4 inches in diameter. Super Colossal. 4-1/2β€²β€² and Up. Yellow, Red, and White. Colossal. 3-3/4β€²β€² and Up. Yellow, Red, and White. Large/Jumbo.

Yellow “Ebenezer” onions, another long-day variety with golden skin and a pale yellow fruit, has a much stronger flavor and can average as much as 1 pound or more in a good growing season. Red onions generally grow slightly smaller than the large white and yellows.

Onions can be roasted, grilled, pickled, caramelized, battered and deep-fried, sliced thinly or chopped and served raw in salads, sandwiches, dips, or as a garnish for tacos, making them among the most versatile and ubiquitous ingredients in the culinary arts.

Permanent Defects A double is an onion in which the shape clearly indicates more than one centre of growth by being lopsided by having a weakened scale covering the two centres of growth which can be readily seen. A double is scored if the outer skin is broken exposing more than 1 centre of growth.
