School lunch in the ’90s was notoriously not nutritious, yet kids loved taco Tuesdays, rectangle pizzas, and prepackaged burritos. The best ’90s school lunch item was somewhere between nachos and Minute Maid juice bars; foods you probably wouldn’t eat as an adult but that once defined your favorite day of the week.
The best way to get a kid to eat anything in the 90s was to either smother it with cheese or top it with candy (not unlike getting us to eat food today) and that’s exactly what Kudos did. Whether your bag was straight chocolate, snickers peanuts, or m&m’s, there was a snack bar for everyone.
The ’90s were a magical time. This may not be exclusive to the ’90s, but you know you had your fill growing up. You know pizza rolls were the perfect snack for your slumber party screening of Clueless (unless you made an actual Cher-style cookie dough log , of course).
The 1960s introduced pizza to school lunch menus. Foods once considered ethnic, like pizza, enchiladas, and chili con carne, made their way onto school menus. Kids could also rely on traditional favorites like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, meatloaf and mashed potatoes, and fish sticks with tartar sauce.
What was the first fast food restaurant to come up with the Happy Meal?
McDonald’s was the first fast food restaurant to come up with the kids’ meal, better known as the Happy Meal. This genius marketing idea consisted of a hamburger, cheeseburger, or chicken nuggets, fries, a soft drink, and a toy all packed in a fun box.
Two words — drinkable yogurt. Go-Gurt was a great addition to any ’90s kids lunch, and what’s more, it made it fun (because ’90s kids loved to have fun while eating. Possibly this is still the case today, because playing with your food is awesome). There was nothing sadder than realizing your Go-Gurt was all squeezed out. Luckily it was OK to have two, because duh — it’s yogurt.
What is lunchables?
Lunchables were the go-to lunch when Mom didn’t feel like making lunch from scratch. Pizza Lunchables. Brutalmoose/YouTube. Lunchables, which are basically a full, deconstructed meal in a box, were released nationwide in 1988, and they are still going strong to this day.
GoGurt was unleashed on kids in 1999 — and parents loved it because it made eating yogurt clean, easy, and, most importantly, fun. GoGurt is still a popular snack today, with Yoplait partnering with popular brands and shows to collaborate, like with the above “Spongebob SquarePants” GoGurts.
Ecto Coolers were rolled out in 1987 to celebrate “Ghostbusters,” but stuck around for over a decade. The flavor changed in 2001 to Shoutin’ Orange Tangergreen, then to Crazy Citrus Cooler in 2006, and it was discontinued altogether a year later.
What was the 90s fruit by the foot?
Fruit by the Foot. Man, the ’90s were fun, especially if you were gifted a Fruit by the Foot in your lunch. The motto for this fruity, tie-dyed snack was “3 feet of fun!”. for a reason.
The String Thing was the most fun part of lunchtime. Like a Fruit by the Foot, it was a “fruit”-flavored chewy fruit snack, but it had designs in it, so you could pull on the string and eat it bit by bit.
Courtesy of Keebler. In the ’90s, Keebler wasn’t just known for its cookies. At the time, it was also making pizza chips called Pizzarias. Pizza-flavored chips, these were the next best thing to Bagel Bites while watching for your favorite after-school show to come on.
We know what you’re thinking: Spaghetti-O’s for lunch?! Spaghetti-O’s were certainly not an on-the-go kind of food, but if you achieved a certain level of hackery, you figured out that Spaghetti-O’s were the perfect lunch if your mother heated them at home, then put them in a Thermos. Still piping hot by lunchtime, this Campbell’s canned pasta was better than Pizza Friday.
One look at these drinks and you’re immediately transported back to a time when your parents just sat you in front of the TV while Rugrats was on, handed you a punch-flavored Squeeze-It, and went out for a few hours. No babysitter needed.
Thank goodness for Gretchen Wieners’ father inventing Toaster Strudel right when people decided to love frosting more than ever. No, but seriously, Toaster Strudel was the breakfast of champions back in the ’90s, long before it had its time to shine in Mean Girls. Making a design out of that oh-so-sweet frosting on that flaky outer crust was a true highlight of anyone’s day.
