Photo of father and son injured in the Syrian War wins award
Dubbed the Hardship of Life, the photo of a father playing with his son won this year’s Siena International Photography Contest (SIPA). The image was captured by the Turk Mehmet Aslan, in the district of Reyhanli, in the province of Hatay, bordering Syria.
On record, Munzir al-Nazzal plays with his son, 5-year-old Mustafa. Despite the smiles, the photo also portrays the consequences of the war. Munzir had his right leg amputated when he was hit by a bomb while walking through a market in northern Syria.
Mustafa was born without his upper and lower limbs due to a congenital problem caused by the medications his mother had to take after inhaling a toxic gas during the conflict. According to photo caption, the boy will need prostheses that are not available where he lives.
The family lives in a town on Turkey’s border with Syria, where Aslan took the photograph.
