▷ The damage of fast-fashion (2022)

Overconsumption

The planet has been experiencing global warming since the mid-20th century. A study proving that the earth would reach its temperature level tipping point in just 2 years.

This drama is due to human industrial activity and over-consumption. Whole containers cross the world to transport goods such as clothes by the ton or even electronic devices.

The pollution of the planet is also due to the emission of greenhouse gases produced by vehicles.

Fast-fashion giant Shein

However, the giants of the textile industry are taking more and more space as an actor in land pollution.

This is particularly the case of the Chinese company Shein, which, according to a recently published study, is responsible for 22% of the CO2 emissions of teenage girls in France, which represents 11% of teenagers in general.

The international fast-fashion giant is growing, but that’s not necessarily a good thing. Shein has gone from relative obscurity to dominating this market, growing its revenue from $2 billion in 2018 to $15.7 billion in 2021.

Last year, Shein overtook Amazon as the most downloaded shopping app in the United States, showing how its use of digital marketing has allowed it to leapfrog its rivals so skilfully.

In an average week, Shein values 100 billion dollars, which is the turnover of Zara and H&M combined in a week.

Their products are of low quality, made in warehouses in China and travel the world by boat or plane in order to deliver their package. Its apparel manufacturing model, along with our demand for it, enables it to produce up to 10,000 new products per day.

The Guangzhou-based company was founded in 2008 by Chris Xu and has 7,000 employees. Based on the “test and repeat” model made famous by Inditex and H&M, only 6% of Shein’s inventory stays in stock for more than 90 days.

It relies on third-party suppliers in China to produce small batches of garments, around 50 to 100 per item. If an item performs well, more batches are ordered; otherwise, the rows are immediately dropped.

Shein ships its products to over 150 countries. The Guangzhou-based company was founded in 2008 by Chris Xu and has 7,000 employees.

It relies on third-party suppliers in China to produce small batches of garments, approximately 50-100 per item.

This company generates a lot of sales due to the fact that their prices are low and they sell a lot of stuff.

This is because items sold at a low price encourage people to buy without really having any need or necessity for that item. It will then be easier to get rid of it more quickly and to buy it back.

This trade also leads to a major waste of clothing produced which ends up in landfill centers or places where the waste is dumped into the ocean: it is cheaper and faster to throw away a garment than to wash it and iron it.

This flourishing activity leads to water pollution.

It’s aggressive marketing combined with the use of algorithms, which scan social media for micro-trends, is allowing brands to cut production to just 10 days.

The designer is obsolete, and instead, sophisticated engineers and software enable the production of screen-appropriate clothing, designed for obsolescence, destined for landfill.

However, the European Commission is trying to put in place measures to slow down the fast fashion industry which is flourishing at the risk of the planet.
